Both parents need to assume responsibility for the health, economic and social well-being of their children. The court will determine the child support arrangement, whether it is to be paid by both parents or only by the non-custodial parent. To reach a reasonable determination, the judge will consider the following points:

• Financial resources of the child
• Financial resources of the custodial parents
• The standard of living the child would have enjoyed if the marriage had continued
• Physical and emotional condition of the child
• Educational needs of the child
• The financial resources, needs, and obligations of both the non-custodial and custodial parent

The State of Colorado provides Child Support Worksheets, which serve as guidelines in calculating child support. Each spouse’s income, cost of daycare, cost of the child’s health insurance and other factors are entered into the calculation in arriving at the child support obligation amounts.
